Below are further information about this year's organised joint train journey as well as other hints on how to organise the trip to Budapest.

Visa and Entry Requirements

Hungary is a member state of the Schengen Agreement. All citizens of other Schengen states, holders of a valid Schengen visa or other residence permits within the Schengen area can enter those countries without problems. Also for nationals of many other countries the stay of 90 days within the Schengen area is possible without a visa. Among them are citizens of Georgia, Ukraine, Israel, as well as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, and Serbia (only for holders of biometric passports). A list of countries whose citizens can enter Hungary without a visa and the length of visa-free stay can be found on the website of the Consular Services of Hungary.

Some of the countries whose citizens need visa for entry are Russia, the states of Northern Africa, Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Schengen visa should be issued by a mission of the country, which is the main destination, but the country of entry and departure is not the determining factor. The Schengen area can be entered from any member state. In any case, it is highly recommended to check the visa regulations on the website of the Consular Services of Hungary.

For participants of the MitOst Festival, MitOst offers assistance with visa invitations. This will require a brief e-mail to For participants who need a visa to enter Hungary, the registration in the early bird registration period is recommended in order to allow sufficient time for the visa issuance process.

The invitations will be sent by e-mail. If an original invitation is required (e.g. for submission to the employer), sufficient time should be scheduled for delivery. Additional costs for express delivery need to be paid by the participants.

Sustainable Travelling

We care about eco-friendly ways of travelling. This year, the festival is taking place in Budapest, which means it will be possible to reach it by land from many places. Therefore, we strongly encourage sustainable means of travelling, such as trains or buses, to arrive to the festival.

Short-haul and connecting flights are particularly harmful to the environment. Therefore, if taking a plane is the only option and there is no direct connection, there might be a possibility of bus or train connection instead of taking another flight. For example, from the airport in Vienna it takes around three hours to arrive to the main train station in Budape

Arriving by Train

From Vienna, Bratislava, Belgrade or Zagreb, Budapest is easily reachable by train or bus in 2-6 hours. In addition, many other Central or Eastern European cities are well connected to Budapest by train.

Therefore, this year we invite the festival participants to travel together by night train! With the aim of encourageing a more sustainable way of travelling, we will organise a group train ride for up to 70 people from Berlin to Budapest. On the 1st of October the couchette and a sleeping car of the Berlin – Budapest night train will turn into the first event location of the MitOst Festival. It will be fun not only because of travelling together, but also because of a programme for a smooth transition into the festival: participants can get to know each other, learn more about Berlin and Budapest, can have a first exchange on this year's festival topics and enjoy some surprises on the way. More information on how to book a place in the train you can find here.

Arriving by Bus

Additionally, there is the possibility to travel by bus. There are direct bus connections from many European cities to Budapest.

Bus and train connections can be found and booked with little effort online!

Arriving by Plane

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is the only airport in Budapest, located at 16 km from the city centre, and offers direct connections to numerous destinations worldwide. From here the festival locations can be reached via bus. All the information about buses operating from the airport to the city centre can be found here.

Travelling Together

Participants who are not travelling from Berlin, but do not want to travel alone and would like to get into the festival mood already during their trip to Budapest are welcome to use the Facebook Group "17th International MitOst Festival". It provides a platform for connecting people to jointly travel to the festival. This is also the best way to look for other people interested in excursions and additional trips before and after the festival.

People who would like to become a travel scout and coordinate a joint trip for a small group of travellers from a city which might be a good starting point for a collective trip can get in touch with the festival team!
